Bible studies for writers | Job 5

How would you have approached Job if you were Eliphaz? We can all answer how we think we might have responded, and Eliphaz often gets a bad reputation for his bluntness, but honestly, he said what most of us might have been thinking: what on EARTH have you done wrong, Job??? Eliphaz is confident in Job as a person – on the outside, the parts he’s seen with his own eyes, but he has doubts about what might be on Job’s inside, unknown to everyone else. And why shouldn’t Eliphaz have doubts? He’s human. I myself probably would have had doubts about Job’s character, and I’m not sure I could have presented my feelings about it as eloquently as Eliphaz did. And I love that while Job’s friend was a bit harsh, he also gave hope. He didn’t say, “Man, you’re screwed.” He said, “Look, I don’t know exactly what’s going on, but I know if you go to God, He will make it right.” It’s funny how a test on one person can domino into a larger circle of people giving reverence to God.
